More, vacuous, summertime holiday weekend fluff-blogging, while our nation goes to hell in a Hefty bag.
I never found this photo in amongst my unpacked stuff at the condo... but I found a picture of the picture (actually, it was a photo of the Carvin Holdsworth H1 prototype guitar that Allan Holdsworth gave me at his birthday party, some years ago, but, it included a picture of this picture).
There I am -- 15, skinny, long hair. Rockin' out on my 1963 Gibson SG. My first kick-ass guitar.
I ended up re-finishing it in high school... I thought the lacquer checking, so treasured by collectors, was ugly. So, I re-did it in Corvette Polar White -- a white so white, it hurt your eyes.
Then, I ended up selling it in my early 20s, to buy a car. It ended up in the hands of an inmate at the local federal pen, I was told by the buyers (who were relatives of the inmate). Dang.

Having a brother-in-law telling me horror stories about the instruments he's sold or had stolen in the past, I've become determined to hold onto everything I ever get...even the plastic nose flute someone gave me a few years ago. :-)
Cool pic, by the way.
Mango -- Luckily, I've never had any stolen, but I've sold a bunch... a few that I loved (like this one, but I had to, really), and many, many more that I was indifferent towards.

Ooh. A Vibrola and ever-thang...
Nice guitar. I had one once - early 60s, stop tail, no Vibrola.
Also had a Melody Maker a few years later - that one had the Vibrola, SG body design, with a hideous DuPont Duco Red finish.
Played like a mo-fo, though. I wouldn't mind having either one of them back.
Stranger -- The vibrola, functionally, sucked, though. I recall having to order the handle from Gibson (and, shock! They had one to send me!), as it didn't have that when I got it (I traded a Gibson Grabber bass for it -- remember those? Sliding pickup!). Then, within a week, I'd broken the up-until-then rarely used plate spring. Dang. So, I ordered that from Gibson, too. Still, no matter how much graphite one used, it would not stay in tune worth a damn, so I pretty much quit using it.

It completely slipped my mind until a few hours later...I gave away a mid-80s Strat to a friend's kid about ten years ago. (How's that for indifferent? :-) ) Wonder how he's coping with the horrible intonation on the thing...
Still, I imagine it hurts to part with a loved instrument, no matter the reason.
Mango -- I'll post one of my "give-away" guitars tomorrow. It was a Korean Mockingbird, and I gave it to the boyfriend of my friend's oldest daughter, 'cause his Dad smashed his Strat in a drunken rage. The kid was a good player, and I didn't want him to be without a guitar, so I gave him this Mockingbird that I gave less than $200 for. Still, it was a pretty nice guitar.
