Curly's Secrets Revealed

Curly's the most common type of cat in the world.
There are three tabby patterns that have been shown to be genetically distinct: classic, mackerel and ticked, and a fourth variation, spotted, that is still undergoing debate as to its cause. The color most recognizable as a tabby is called brown tabby in the US and black tabby in the UK. Technically it is a black cat with an agouti gene that causes the fur to break into patterns of black and brown. While the name "black tabby" is more correct, the brown tabby moniker is firmly established in the US and any change is doubtful.

The mackerel tabby pattern is the most common, as the gene for this is dominant to the classic pattern. It has vertical, gently curving stripes on the side of the body. The stripes are thin and may be continuous or broken into bars and spots on the flanks and stomach. Often, an "M" shape appears on the forehead. This pattern is often called fishbone tabby.

It looks like Curly is hanging out in the sun today. He also looks very relaxed! Yea Curly!

As I kid I had a tortie.
I'm not sure what Milo is. (I adopted him a few years ago.) He looks like Atrios's Wiley but with white paws and a white ruff.

Curly is a hunk, that's for sure. Chunky and hunky. Almost too much for one cat to have to handle.

I love the dynamic between the two of you. And your obvious affection for Curly is one of the best things (for me) about your blog.

Thanks for all the great posting and pictures. (I like your politics, too.)

He may be a "common type," but Curly is most certainly a unique personality. And one lucky boy, to have such a great dad.

Hugs to you both. Hope the new job is going well; glad you can work with your favorite feline nearby.

I had a classic brown (gray) tabby with a white locket on his chest -- he was a real sweet kitty and I had almost 18 happy years with him.

Is there a classic tabby personality? I heard someone say once that my old kitty had "a classic sweet tabby personality" -- and I know my second generation of cats -- tuxedo cats -- are very different beasties than he was. Just as lovable and entertaining, but different.
