Excellent geeky news!
Soprano? You out there?
If nothing else, I know for a fact I've recovered the raw footage of Tom Thumb and Nomad, if not the finished clips* (and I can re-do and upload the clips for you, worst-case). Same with my B.B. tribute footage, I think (not 'zachary sure what all I have, really, but signs are very, very good -- now burning DVD #2, and I won't know what all is there until I poke through its contents... which is difficult to do in "safe mode" on the desktop).
That's right: Micro$oft came through for me (for ONCE!) on this Toshi HDD access issue. Gore be praised!
Fuckin' NTFS permissions and SID numbers... *sigh*. It has been just a little bit tricksy... I've had to stay in XP's "safe mode," and burn DVDs of directory trees from there, since the permissions I'm applying to any account other than the generic "Administrator" don't seem to stick when I boot up normally, for some reason (and you can't log into the generic Administrator account from anywhere other than "safe mode"... Jeebus, these M$ guys could fuck up a wet dream... but at least they erred on the side of security... for once). It may be because I'm a li'l rusty on Microsoft's terminology about child-parent inheritance as relates to NTFS permissions -- yeah, at one time, I did actually used to occasionally administer some Windows 2000 servers running IIS for a Fortune 100 company, 3+ years ago -- but... who knows? Once the directory trees are burned to DVD, I can get to all of it. The point is, I can get to everything I need, now (albeit with a little hoop-jumping), and that is, in itself, a beautifimous thang!
Thanks muchly to JR and Doug for pointing me in the right directions -- you guys R.A.W.K. (Really Aughta Work Kode). :) And, of course, to GeorgeM, who sent me the nifty 2.5" HDD-to-USB enclosure. I know it wasn't expensive (hell, the shipping was almost as much as the device, itself!), but it has been invaluable -- thank you again, kind sir!
I guess I can take some small comfort in the fact that if this old notebook's HDD fell into enemy hands (heh), they'd have to have the least little bit on the ball in order to be able to read its contents. ;) Gee, thanks, Micro$oft! :)
Anywhoo, Soprano, I'll be in touch when I get all what I got. ;)
* I recovered the finished clips -- whoo-hooo x 2! :)
