Yes, this is my old, crappy desk, turned on its end. The cats thought it was entertaining running in and out of the bottom section, so that gave me an idea...
It works well as a divider between the dining room (currently full of swap spot junk) and the living room, and as you can see, can be used for storing books and media. I think this will be the launching point for the overhead catwalk maze I want to install. A climbing pole will work for LarryElvis, and I'll do a set of staggered, moderately-spaced, carpeted shelves that will stay empty, and act as cat stairs, using this as the near-floor level beginning.
What say ye? $50-100 this first payday towards material, including the condo's first LiveActionCatcam...
UPDATE: A couple of sketches, one from the normal perspective, looking at the end of the wall that separates the hallway from the galley-style kitchen. The second is a view from above.
UPDATE II: Crappy isometric drawing , hastily done. It's been a while since 10th Grade drafting class! :) Anywhoo, you might get the idea. The closet opening isn't there, yet, but easy to do. I'm guessing 3/4" birch plywood for the Catport. It takes paint pretty well, and will be sturdy. It'll take about half a sheet, leaving half for other platforms.

Looks very cool. Have you checked out rorschach's cat furniture?

You're nuts JP!

Plum P -- Why, girl... I don't know what to say! Why? Because I want to do something fun for my kitties, and interesting from a decorating point-of-view?

Karin -- Nicely done! But what I have in mind is probably cheaper, and going to be more fun for the cats, I think. They'll have overhead raceways throughout the condo!

Years ago I saw an article in People magazine where some cat owners had done some work in ther house like you're planning. I though it was really cool and have always wanted to do the same.
Donna Marie -- Yes; I got the idea from these folx, but I saw this long before analannie started on about it. The site seems to be down today (and often!), so maybe you won't see it, tonight. Anyway, it's too cool, and the amounts of materials we're talking about here make it super cheap and easy to do. Just some weekend time and power tools, and some smarts is all that's required.

I don't want to disappoint you, but knowing cats, you'll probably spend all this time and money constructing this, and the little bastards won't ever use it!!
Cats are the ultimate cheap dates - a crumpled up piece of tin foil and an empty cardboard box are all they need for hours of amusement.
Very cool, Jeff.
This looks delightful and may well become their favorite hang out. Love your kitties, JP and am so delighted in your new job!
...because they will shoot their eyes out with this thing!

Right up to the minute Cat A decides to use the stairs, and Cat B chooses that instant to use one of 'em as a napping spot. Guarandamnteed...
