He's on the balcony, very near the open door, about 6' from a single, low-wattage twisty -- the ONLY current illumination in the room, save the notebook screen.

It's called CHDK Allbest, and works with most models of Canon's point-n-shoot cameras. It's a firmware hack that gives you near DSLR control over all the camera's parameters, instead of just the canned- and very-limited manual settings that come standard in the firmware. .
