Dude, get a scanner! Check your local Craigslist for used, as well as eBay.
I've had a scanner of some kind running in the background practically every waking minute for 30 some years.
You really get a feel foe what actually happening in your city and neighborhood listening to the police, fire and emts. The local news and papers don't report 10% of what actually goes on.
